Reporting to the Assistant Art Director, the Outsource Artist is responsible for maintaining the established quality and artistic consistency of outsourced art, as established by project art direction. This role requires the creation of stub assets in Maya to establish shape, scale and materials for an asset, gathering image reference and providing feedback to external artists. The Outsource Artist will still have the opportunity to create art for the game - 50% feedback to external artists/50% art creation. This role will work closely with the Assistant Art Director, IP holder, and external studios to maintain clear visual targets and documented workflow, and will coordinate with the Outsource Manager to ensure that external artists have clear, consistent, and timely feedback so that art production is not blocked.


The ideal candidate has a strong artistic eye and a solid grasp of art fundamentals, as well as the ability to understand how to integrate the finished art into an Unreal pipeline.  The ideal candidate also has a good understanding of how art is created for next gen games and of the technical restraints.  


Essential Functions:

  • Work closely with the Assistant Art Director and IP holder to maintain artistic consistency across several external art studios 
  • Define and document technical and visual execution guidelines for externally created assets
  • Write and oversee the writing of documentation and briefs for vendors
  • Work with the Assistant Art Director and Outsourcing Manager to identify and schedule assets for external development
  • Clearly communicate the artistic vision of a project to external vendors
  • Evaluate visual quality and technical execution of incoming work and provide actionable feedback
  • Build relationships with external art vendors across multiple projects
  • Improve efficiency and quality of outsourcing pipeline
  • Work with other departments to ensure that assets are delivered in a timely manner

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep understanding of art fundamentals, with a portfolio of professional work
  • 2+ years of experience in game art development 
  • Thorough knowledge of content creation workflow and constraints
  • Experience delivering high-quality content in a variety of artistic disciplines
  • Clear and concise communication and people skills with the ability to discuss technical and visual details
  • Experience working with one or more industry-standard engines, such as Unreal. 
  • Fearless about trying out new tools with a commitment to keeping up with the latest industry standards, best practices and approaches to creative projects
  • Software experience such as Maya, Photoshop, ZBrush, Substance Designer, and Perforce
  • Plus
    • Experience working with outsourcing teams
    • Experience in a lead artist role
    • Teaching experience
