Job Purpose: Responsible for the specimen collecting; processing; test performance, and reporting test results. This includes the preanalytic, analytic, and post analytic phases of testing. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served; Neonate, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric. 

 

Essential Functions: (Examples of Duties)

  1. Performs testing and patient collecting duties per protocols/procedures
  2. Demonstrates and maintains competence in all procedures as listed on the dept competency
  3. Follows the laboratory’s procedure for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results both waived and moderate complexity testing
  4. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
  5. Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, and documents all quality control activities, instrument, and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed
  6. Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance and give feedback about necessary changes
  7. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of  test results, and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the Administrative Laboratory Director, or Laboratory Supervisor
  8. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications and inform the Laboratory Director or Supervisor
  9. Responsible for all training related to “opening and closing” the department
  10. Responsible for training all staff to ensure that they understand that all orders/specimens  for the day are handled prior to leaving shift
  11. Responsible for training new staff for each of the prior essential functions
  12. Responsible for retraining of staff when it is identified that more training is needed
  13. Acts as a resource for other staff when needed 

Qualifications

Job Requirements/Qualifications: (Describe minimum qualifications, preferred or required)

  

Education:   High school graduate or equivalent and Phlebotomy Certificate.

 

Experience:  Prior phlebotomy experience required, prior experience with Orchard software is preferred but not required.

 

Knowledge and Skills:  

  • Excellent customer relations skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Attention to detail and concentration
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, ever –changing environment

 

Licenses/Certifications:  Encourage board certification. Phlebotomy Certificate.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), bio hazard body fluid, and hazardous chemicals
  • Sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distractions and stress
  • Hazardous working conditions in which individuals are exposed to definite risk of bodily injury through contact with moving instrumentations, chemicals, and/or body fluids
  • Certain incidental functions may require use of protective gear such as face shields, gloves, and fluid-resistant coats

 

Physical Demands:  

  • Medium work of lifting up to 50 pounds and/or carry object weighting up to 25 pounds
  • Responsible for lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects
