Position purpose

The Histotechnician II/HTL main responsibility is to perform all functions in the histology lab to include embedding, microtomy, staining and filing.

 

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

· Provide back up for Lab Assistant and Supervisor

· Train new employees

• Gross*, embed, cut, and stain tissue according to designated procedures

• Perform all routine and specialized histology tissue, slide prep and staining procedures

• Complete assigned workload within prescribed time limit

• Prepare reagents for tissue processing and routine slide staining

• Maintain legible, accurate complete logs and record of testing

• Distributing slides to pathologists

• Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment

• Troubleshoot procedures and instrumentation

• Ensure all corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met

• Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations

• Maintain a clean and well-organized work area

• Other duties, as assigned

Qualifications

Qualifications

Education:

· High school diploma or equivalent required

· *Associate’s degree in science or equivalent science education required for Histology Technicians performing gross examination of specimens and other high complexity testing.

· Education and training sufficient to support CLIA 88 requirements for the position held. This is to be reflective of the scope of practice in regular scheduled responsibilities and pay grade meeting all HCFA-CLIA 88 “testing personnel” criteria.

Experience: Three (3) year experience in laboratory setting.

Physical Requirements

· Frequently required to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time.

· Use of hands to finger, handle, feel objects, tools or controls.

· Constantly talk, hear and smell.

· Frequently lift 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move 25 to 50 pounds.

· Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Equipment Operated

This role routinely involves standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Also, laboratory equipment is used daily.

 

Work Environment

This job operates in professional laboratory environments. Frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals, moving/mechanical parts, sharp objects, blood or body fluids, communicable diseases, computer monitors, repetitive motions. Local travel in the region may be required to another location as needed.
